Software to Spy on BlackBerry: How It Works

The smart phone wars have been going on for some time now. One of the main contenders in this war is the BlackBerry. Despite all the flashy applications that the iPhone offers, the BlackBerry is still the preferred smartphone of businessmen who appreciate convenience and reliability over flashy interfaces.

There is now a new application for the BlackBerry that is becoming increasingly popular: software to spy on BlackBerry.

Software to spy on BlackBerry comes in many names and brands, but they are do pretty much the same, which is collecting information from a BlackBerry and then store it on a website. How this information is used is up to each person, but common uses are: controlling long distance calls, knowing who is in touch with your children and for what purposes, finding out if your spouse is cheating on you, controlling employees that spend a lot of time out of the office, and of course, finding out quickly where the person holding the phone is in case of an emergency.

There are people who spy on BlackBerry for other purposes, but those are the main and most common ones.

Ok, but how does the software work?

Simple, any smartphone sends and receives information to an area's local network. This local network connects to other, bigger networks, including the Internet, until it reaches its final destination, which is another phone.

What the software does is that it collects the information that the phone sends and then sends a copy of it to a website using the Internet. The information is then stored on the website and it's accessible only to the person that has the correct username and password.

Note that in order to spy on BlackBerry, you need the identification number of that BlackBerry in specific. This software doesn't collect information from any BlackBerry, only from the ones whose identification number you provide. The identification number can be found inside the battery compartment of the BlackBerry.

As for the username and password, you create them yourself when you open an account in the website of the developer of the software. And yes, it has a cost, but I believe it's a very reasonable one if you are using the software for a good purpose.

Finally, the kind of information that you get when you spy on BlackBerry is very useful, but again, it depends on what you want it for. Specifically, you get the call history of the phone, the content of all sent and received text messages, the location of the phone on a local online map, and access to the phone's memory.

The Technology of Blackberry

RIM provides a proprietary multi-tasking operating system (OS) for the BlackBerry, which makes heavy use of the device's specialized input devices, particularly the thumbwheel. The OS provides support for MIDP 1.0 and WAP 1.2.

Previous versions allowed wireless synchronization with Microsoft Exchange Server's e-mail and calendar, as well as with Lotus Domino's e-mail. The current OS 4 provides a subset of MIDP 2.0, and allows complete wireless activation and synchronization with Exchange's e-mail, calendar, tasks, notes and contacts, and adds support for Novell GroupWise and Lotus Notes.

Third-party developers can write software using these APIs, and proprietary BlackBerry APIs as well, but any application that makes use of certain restricted functionality must be digitally signed so that it can be associated to a developer account at RIM. This signing procedure guarantees the authorship of an application, but does not guarantee the quality or security of the code.

Earlier BlackBerry models used C++ for software development, but all current models support MDS and universally supported Java (using the J2ME set of libraries). Software development for BlackBerry is also available through Visual Studio .NET via the AppForge Crossfire add-in which enables development in C# or VB.NET. A growing number of third party commercial applications are available for BlackBerry. These include applications in sales force automation, customer relationship management, and remote IT administration. There is also a wide selection of free 3rd party software available for the Blackberry.

Although push email is the main reason for the BlackBerry's meteoric rise, the form factor and keyboard make it as usable as any handheld device on the market. With the trackwheel combined with the QWERTY keyboard, you'll type and get around on the BlackBerry much faster than your Palm-toting friends. The newer, consumer-targeted 7100 series has a smaller form factor and fewer keys. In order to type using a keyboard on which more than one letter is assigned to a key, the 7100 uses a technology called SureType, which predicts the words you are typing as you enter them. This feature is surprisingly effective, and RIM has promised more typing improvements around the corner.

In addition to the keyboard layout, the BlackBerry OS provides myriad shortcut keys that advanced users will want to commit to memory. Built-in shortcuts provide quick access to common programs and functions, not only allowing you to move around quicker but also reducing the battery usage. Although you'll find the keyboard a breeze compared with those of other handhelds, you can also create your own abbreviations to shorten common phrases. For example, you could set up an AutoType abbreviation to insert your mailing address when you type the string addr in a text field.

How To Fix "Reload Software 507" Error On Your BlackBerry

So this should be a quickie. At a recent client's place I encountered an error that happened when I tried to update her BlackBerry Storm for the first time in a LONG time. It was the dreaded "Reload Software 507" error...or just "507" which shows up on others.

Here is the setup so that if you happened to do the exact same thing, the solution will be fully applicable. The solution, however, works for all other BlackBerrys... (or is it blackberries? Anybody know the plural version of a BlackBerry?):

Installed Desktop Manager from BlackBerry's website
After installation, innocently plugged in the BlackBerry
Casually chatted with the client while it connected and prompted me to update the apps, firmware, and OS
FORTUNATELY, when asked to backup BlackBerry first, I said OK. (Never deny backups!)
BlackBerry backs up
New BB software downloads from the web
Two-thirds of the way through the backup, for some inexplicable reason, it crashes
"Reload Software 507" error shows up and the BlackBerry has turned itself into a pricey brick.

Oh no! What to do! Number one thing to NEVER do in any situation IN LIFE is PANIC. I don't remember a situation ever where panicking was ever a good thing. (Thinks back to vehicular accidents survived...)

Ok, here's the solution (Why beat around the bush? You just want your BB back right?): [NOTE: It's essential that the solution is performed in the order listed...why? Because it won't work otherwise...trust me.]

Unplug the BB in current brick form
Go into your Desktop Manager settings and make sure that it isn't configured to back up upon syncing. (Why? because if you don't, the minute your BB is back online, it can potentially copy over all your backed up data...then you're really USCWAP)
Your BB should still be showing that annoying error on the screen. Get rid of it by taking out the battery.
Now...with the battery still out of your BB, plug it into your computer.
Depending on your OS, it will either recognize it right away and restore applications, or it will (as it was in my case) not do anything because I was on a Mac.
Let it "steep" for a bit if you are on a Mac and stare at the lovely no battery icon that shows up when you have it plugged in.
After you are sufficiently satisfied that nothing more is going to happen, insert the battery without disconnecting the connection.
Now watch the magic happen...the software will state the obvious and tell you that there is no OS present and will prompt you to choose which OS you wish to install. I chose the recommended latest one.
The re-installation of the BB OS should occur at this point. If it doesn't? Re-do this whole process again. I would say that after 3 or 4 times, if it STILL doesn't work, then your BB is pretty messed up and you should probably just get a new one...

Epilogue:

After you are done restoring the OS or restoring the upgraded OS, you will notice that you have NOTHING on it in terms of your settings and data. AGAIN, DON'T PANIC! What did we say about that?

Instead, plug the BB back (hopefully you didn't re-configure it to automatically backup yet...if so, turn it back off and stop jumping the gun!) and once the BB is recognized, click on the Restore icon. You will then be asked to choose what file to use to restore and there should be the one you just backed up everything on. Do so and enjoy your BB again!

So hopefully you were able to restore your BlackBerry back from the dreaded "Reload Software 507" Error. Good luck!

The Evolution of the Blackberry

In the world of mobile communication, there are plenty of ways that the public approaches their methods of contact with family, friends, and co-workers. Today, it is now becoming increasingly popular to utilize gadgets and items that go beyond allowing one to make a simple phone call. This is especially seen with the current line of Blackberry products on the market.

While companies race to make the slimmest design, highest-end multimedia capabilities, and present the latest creations, Blackberry technology has a reputation for being one of the best in the business.

The latest technology associated with the Blackberry line of products involves a Research in Motion (RIM) brainchild that pushes the envelope in wireless email capabilities by providing the ability to easily communicate worldwide. A full QWERTY keyboard and trackball navigation located in the center of the device moves beyond the Blackberry Pearl design. One of newest features associated with the Blackberry name is the enhanced built-in GPS technology. Now, driving direction services are offered through TeleNav. A satisfying multimedia player is also included.

Another addition to the many great features a Blackberry delivers is the light sensor-sensitivity that allows automatic screen, keyboard, and trackball adjustment that accommodates varying levels of lighting conditions. This comes in handy when a user wishes to send or receive emails in dark locations. The built-in GPS allows consumers to reach their intended destinations without using a separate device.

Additional features associated with the BlackBerry line of products include an Intel PXA901 312 MHz processor, 64 MB flash memory, and 16 MB SDRAM. Some BlackBerry gadgets can be fully integrated into a company's system through the installation of a BlackBerry Enterprise Server. The new 8800 model has also helped to push the number of BlackBerry subscribers to 8 million.

Brief Evolution of the Blackberry

When the wireless handheld device known as the BlackBerry was released to the public in 1999, consumers were met with a variety of capabilities, including text messaging, Internet faxing, mobile telephone, email, and web browsing. The Canadian company, Research in Motion (also known as RIM) tapped into a market that thrived on innovative communication advancements.

The first Blackberry models presented a small monochrome screen with the 800-series, which worked on a network that only allowed consumers the use of email and WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) services, followed by the capability to engage in AOL instant messaging. The "Quark" 6000-model line soon trailed, offering a medium 160 x 100 pixel monochrome screen. This would later become the first examples of an integrated Blackberry phone that would showcase integrated two-way radio abilities in the 6510.

With the production of the 7250, the screen provided 240 x 160 pixel color capabilities and now allowed consumers to benefit from Bluetooth technology. The phone would highlight integrated two-way radio power in the 7510 with the introduction of GPS in the 7520. The increase in Blackberry speed became a reality as the "Pearl" 8100 showcased a new trackball interface with a 1.3 MP camera, speakerphone, GPS, Bluetooth, and polyphonic ringtones.

The model also provided an enhanced media player. The latest - "Gamma Ray" 8800 was the first Blackberry to offer screen capabilities of 320 x 240 @ 65K. The 8000-line also produced the 8300 model, which upped the camera potential with 2.0 MP features.

Few Blackberry Applications Have Become "Must-Have" For Small Businesses

Not long ago, there was a time when two words "Blackberry" and "Software" could not belong to the same sentence, although it came with a few applications. Nowadays users have huge demand for utility applications.

Time has changed conveniently when phone manufacturers and third-party Application or software developers are meeting those needs. Beyond e-mailing and calling, Blackberry now offers many features that directly help small and medium level businesses. There was a time when consumers thought that Easy email access is the only good feature that makes Blackberry phones so popular. But now refurbished Blackberry device and availability of path breaking third party applications proved that wrong.

Most of the new applications are phenomenal along with multitasking. And most importantly the new applications are significantly showing the way how to operate small and medium size businesses and how to boost the productivity and ROI.

The increasingly robust list of Blackberry Applications contains ample range of utility applications such as "Blackberry Messanger", "Evernote", "Google Sync and Calendar", "Skype App", "Google Mobile App", "Bridge for high rise", "Tungle.me", "Don't disturb App", "IM +", "Viigo", "Slacker", "Qik Live Streaming", "Guitar Hero World Tour" etc.

As per the users' choice, these applications have become 'must-have' applications. The wireless beat of these Blackberry applications make users spend time with business away from the business house.

Blackberry Messenger allows unlimited and free chatting with other Blackberry Messenger users. And users can send both text and image during chatting. It allows users to keep in touch with partners, clients, organize tasks and get the work done. Meanwhile users can share images during chatting.

Evernote allows users to make lists, take notes, tag pictures, share memos, and organize streams of information, during the move with Blackberry device. Google Sync and Calendar along Google Contact are another useful application to keep track of your business network and appointments.

Skype is mostly used for internationally video and text communication. Now the Skype app on Blackberry gives users much of the functionality of the desktop version, allowing them to make calls, chatting through a wireless connection, and access to their contact list.

Google Mobile Apps on Blackberry allow users to receive, edit, and send e-mails and docs, catch up on any subscribed blogs. This Application makes sure that user would not miss any meeting or appointment.

The Bridge Blackberry app transfers the detailed business contacts, tasks, and e-mail info of the users from desktop to mobile, and vice versa. Tungle.me enhances user's existing calendar by syncing it with a public version where you can propose meetings to partners or clients and allow them to book the appointments at pre-approved times. Tungle.me's customized pages make calendars easy to find, and their Blackberry app allows you to use most of the features from anywhere.

Sometimes, phone calls make unwanted distractions and it may interrupt the actual day-to-day operations. Blackberry supports the Do Not Disturb application that allows users to automatically filtering the calls screening out some other numbers. And the same time it lets others through without turning off or silencing the phone.

There is certainly a hoax for Blackberry Application. And the trick is not much when users find apps for blackberry Software development for their small business. Rather finding the best one is a big matter.

Apart from these applications, there are many third party Blackberry Application that developers are working on. They develop innovative Blackberry applications with the help of several updated versions of Blackberry operating Systems. Most of them can create standalone programs on Blackberry platform.

Nowadays, specialized and customized Blackberry Applications are developed in many development companies and there is much more a business users can do with Blackberry Applications; although the avid Blackberry users can also scratch these Blackberry applications and solutions. With the growing demand of Blackberry users, the third party developers are also trying not to lack in the race any more.

BlackBerry Programming 101 - How to Get Started With BlackBerry Software Development

The success of newer BlackBerry models like the Pearl, Curve, Bold and Storm have allowed RIM (Research in Motion) to penetrate the consumer smartphone market and go head-to-head with the Apple iPhone as an application platform. If you've been ignoring the BlackBerry platform because it was too Enterprise-focused for your applications, it might be time to specifically target the BlackBerry. Here's how you get started.

It's Java Time

BlackBerry development for all recent models is done exclusively in Java. So if you're not a strong Java programmer, now's the time to brush up on your Java programming skills. (C# programmers will find the transition to Java fairly simple, the languages are very close in most respects.) Don't learn about the newest Java features, however, because the BlackBerry platform is built on top of Java Micro Edition (Java ME), which is itself a derivative of Java version 1.3. So forget all the fancy (but useful) language features introduced in Java 1.5 -- generics, enumerations, and so on -- you can't use these in BlackBerry programming. You can't also use most of the library classes you're familiar with -- they're just not there. A small subset of the Java Standard Edition (Java SE) classes are supported, as well as a number of BlackBerry-specific classes.

Java Micro Edition?

Once you've brushed up on your Java, you need to spend a bit of time understanding the Java ME platform, which was formerly known as Java 2 Micro Edition, or J2ME for short. You need to understand the concepts of configurations and profiles, and in particular the CLDC and MIDP standards. You'll find lots of information about these in various books and on Sun's Java development site.

The BlackBerry Platform

After learning about Java ME, it's time to explore the BlackBerry platform. The BlackBerry platform is based on the CLDC and includes support for MIDP 2.0. However, a large number of BlackBerry-specific classes are also provided. Which brings you to the first question you'll face: are you going to write a BlackBerry application or a MIDP application? In a MIDP application you're constrained to only use the APIs exposed by the CLDC and MIDP standards. Your application will run on the BlackBerry and on most cellphones, but it won't be able to use any of the BlackBerry's special features. You can use any MIDP-compatible development tool, such as the Sun Java Wireless Toolkit for CLDC (formerly known as the J2ME Wireless Toolkit), to create your applications.

Most application developers opt to build BlackBerry-specific applications. This means learning the BlackBerry-specific APIs -- including new user interface classes -- and using the BlackBerry Java Development Environment (JDE) to develop your applications. The JDE, which is free to download, works with the standard Java Software Development Kit and provides you with all the tools necessary to create, package, test and debug BlackBerry applications. You don't even need a BlackBerry handheld, because the JDE includes a full-featured BlackBerry device simulator. A complete set of JavaDocs is provided that describes all the classes and interfaces available to programmers.

After downloading and installing the JDE, you'll want to read the developer's guides that come with the JDE and look at the sample applications that are shipped with it. Then start your development by writing a few simple applications to get a feel for the BlackBerry APIs and the tools.

Get A BlackBerry Handheld

Although you can develop and test your applications for free, at some point you'll need to run the application on an actual BlackBerry handheld. This will cost you money, of course, and so it's not something you'll want to do until you're serious about writing BlackBerry applications. On-device testing is crucial to ensuring that the application works correctly, because the simulator is not a perfect emulation system.

If you're truly serious about BlackBerry application development, consider also joining one of the BlackBerry developer programs for additional support and early access to new devices and APIs. You should also explore RIM's other BlackBerry developer resources. There are also third-party forums and books available to help you learn the BlackBerry platform.

Conclusion

BlackBerry programming is not hard if you know some Java and you understand the constraints and limitations of the underlying Java ME platform. You have to learn a new set of APIs and use new development tools, but in the end it's just another kind of Java programming.

Classic Arcade Gaming on a Blackberry

If you have ever had to wait for a flight or a doctor's appointment, you would appreciate having games on your Blackberry to help pass the time. The current Blackberry devices only come with Brick Breaker, a take off on the classic Breakout. Luckily, you can now find your favorite classic arcade games and download it onto your Blackberry in just minutes. To find a game there are several websites to search on with hundreds of different games to choose from. You can choose from the arcade games like Pac Man to more modern-skilled games like Guitar Hero.

Some games are free to download while other requires that you purchase the game first. In most cases, you'll be able to try the first few rounds of game before purchasing. To download a game first find which one you like the best. Make sure the website is safe and customer service feedback is excellent. The number one complaint with these sites is that they couldn't get answers to their questions. Once you pay for the game you will want to make sure you have no trouble downloading the game on your phone. Another common complaint is that once the payment has been made the download failed and no one was available to assist with the problem. For most part there are no troubles and before you even purchase your game the site will run a check to make sure your phone is compatible in the download process. If it is not you won't be able to purchase the games. Most new Blackberry devices will have the option to download new games, wallpapers and ringtones directly from the phone. These sites are more expensive, but they make it easy to get games on your phone.

Most mobile companies will offer a download shop on their site so you can download all the latest games, music, ringtones and wallpaper from a well known site. You are charged an individual charge for each download or it is billed to you with your monthly phone service. The latest in downloads can be found on your mobile phone site.

Some of the more popular games to download right now would be Golf, Monopoly, Texas Hold'em, Sudoku, Call of Duty 3, Monopoly Tycoon, Bookworm, Worms 2007, and Chuzzle. Among free games, Pac Man continues to be a popular download. The top ten favorite MP3 ringtones are from famous singers such as Leona Lewis, Ray J, Beyonce, Britney Spears, Natasha Beddingfield, Plies, AC/DC, Metro Station and Danity Kane. Although these are the most popular you can find any song from your favorite genre and download it. Ringtones are usually priced anywhere from $2 to $4. Games typically run anywhere from $10 to $40.

Some download sites allow you to create an account, allowing you to re-download past purchases. It will also allow you to download free products as they are offered. In some cases, you can earn bonus credits, similar to a shoppers club card. This ensures the site that you will be a continued customer so they keep the prices down and it lets you in on good deals so that ultimately you will purchase more. Adding games and ringtones to your Blackberry is just one of the many ways to personalize your device.

There are such enormous features; especially all-in-one smart phone attracts buyers by and large.

Blackberry becomes the dominant choice for buying a smartphone of especially of business people and gradually others as well. Its popularity leads to the gradual development of Blackberry Application and software market. RIM has already launched Blackberry App World with availability of more than one thousand apps. BlackBerry Applications - What Software Developers Need to Know

As the BlackBerry smartphone gains market share, software developers are increasingly wondering if they should be writing or porting applications to run on the BlackBerry platform. It's not a decision to be taken lightly because there are significant investments in time and effort in writing software for any mobile platform. And the BlackBerry platform is very different from the other platforms. Here's a quick rundown on what you need to know before creating BlackBerry applications.

BlackBerry software is written in Java. Java is the only choice for non-browser application development. You can't write applications in C or C++, so don't even bother going there. (The very earliest models of the BlackBerry supported C/C++, but the platform switched to Java exclusively several years ago.)

The Java is Java ME. The BlackBerry's Java support is for Java ME (Micro Edition), the stripped-down version of Java designed for mobile phones and other constrained devices. The language is the same (most features are supported) but the class libraries are vastly different -- mostly because they're much smaller. This makes porting code a challenge.

But it's also BlackBerry-specific. The Java ME class library is small, so the BlackBerry augments it with a number of device-specific APIs, including the graphical user interface APIs. You need to learn these APIs to write "real" BlackBerry applications.

You need to test on real devices. This shouldn't be any surprise to anyone who's done mobile application development before, but it's even truer on the BlackBerry platform. The BlackBerry simulator can easily give you a false sense of security when testing your application features, especially the networking aspects. There's nothing like testing it on a real device. Preferably, several real devices.

BlackBerry infrastructure is complex. BlackBerry programming isn't just about understanding Java and the BlackBerry APIs, it's also about understanding the entire BlackBerry infrastructure, from the BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) to the BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) and everything in between.

The reality is that BlackBerry programming is a specialization that is developed over time. It's not nearly as simple as it seems at first, as many developers have discovered to their dismay.

Blackberry Cellular Phones - Free Blackberry Software Information

Did you know that the Internet offers you a plethora of free Blackberry software, games, themes and ringtones that allow you to customize your Blackberry into your own personal, perfect tool?

Some of the free Blackberry software applications available online are things like:

GPS navigation tools
text editors
to-do lists
television listings
Body Mass Index (BMI) calculators

There are millions of websites willing to offer you some of these free software applications. As with any application that is downloaded from the Internet, you have to be use caution and good judgment.

Always remember this - as many people as there are that are willing to give you free, useful software there are an equal number if not more that have no qualms about adding viruses and spyware to your computer and Blackberry. Make sure that if you plan to download software for your Blackberry phone from the Internet, that you are using a PC or laptop that has virus or spyware protection.

There are also anti-virus applications developed especially for the Blackberry, but not necessarily for free. According to some computer experts, the Blackberry cannot be infected by viruses. However, it would be prudent to protect yourself whenever possible.

Websites that offer free Blackberry software usually tell you exactly how to download and install the software. However, if they do not, there are forums, blogs, and other mobile phone sites that offer you the kind of help you need. To install using desktop manager, just extract the downloaded files to a place you can easily remember (like your desktop) and then use the desktop manager's installation wizard to do the rest.

How to Set Up Your Blackberry Development Environment

You can easily develop BlackBerry software applications if you install the right tools on your computer: a Java Software Development Kit (JDK) and a BlackBerry Java Development Environment (JDE). These tools are downloadable for free from the Sun Microsystems and Research In Motion websites.

The JDK supplies the basic tools for compiling Java source code into the bytecode used by the Java interpreter. The JDK also provides the Java interpreter that is used to run many of the development tools in the JDE.

The JDE supplies the BlackBerry-specific tools for transforming Java bytecode into the special format used by the Java-like interpreter on BlackBerry handhelds. It also supplies the debugging and editing tools required for serious software development.

Start by determining which version of the BlackBerry operating system (OS) you plan on targeting. This determines which version of the JDE to use, which in turn determines which version of the JDK to install.

The general rule is this: always use a JDE version equal to or less than the OS version you're targeting. For example, if you're targeting OS 4.3 you can use JDE 4.0, 4.1, 4.2 or 4.3 to develop your application, but not 4.5, 4.7 or 5.0. (The JDE versions skipped 4.4., 4.6, 4.8 and 4.9, by the way.) This isn't a strict rule, because you can sometimes use a later JDE version to build applications that work on older OS versions, but RIM doesn't guarantee that those applications will work or that they will even load on earlier OS versions. (They certainly won't load if you use an API that isn't supported in the older versions.) To be safe, then, you'll always want to use the correct JDE version for the final builds of your application, even if you use a different JDE version for interim development. (There are some nice features in the newer JDE versions, after all.)

Once you've determined which JDE to use, download and install the correct version of the JDK. For JDE versions 4.0.2 and prior, JDK 1.4 is required. For JDE versions 4.1 to 4.2, use JDK 1.5. For versions 4.3 and higher, JDK 1.6 is required. You can download the appropriate JDK from the Sun Microsystems website. (Note that JDK versions 1.4 and 1.5 are quite old now and are no longer officially supported by Sun, but they are still available for download and are required by the older JDE versions.)

After installing the appropriate JDK, download and install the desired JDE from the BlackBerry developer site. You'll need to register for a free account on the site. Don't forget to join RIM's BlackBerry developer program while you're at it.

Different versions of the JDK and the JDE can co-exist on the same machine with no problem if you install them in the correct order: JDK 1.4 first, followed by JDE 4.0; JDK 1.5 followed by JDE 4.1 to 4.2; JDK 1.6 followed by the remaining JDE versions. Otherwise you'll need to alter the paths used by the different batch and executable files in the JDE to use the correct JDK version -- a bit of a hassle, certainly, but not difficult to do at all.

For links to the JDKs and JDEs mentioned, please consult the resources section of the BlackBerry programming website.

What You Need to Know to Download BlackBerry Software

Although the BlackBerry is absolutely everywhere, you'd have to be living under a rock to not have heard of the iPhone's amazing success. If the iPhone's App Store is the heart of its popularity, then BlackBerry users better have some rebuttal.

Few people seem to know it, but they do. Many of the BlackBerry apps out there are free, easy to download, and do the very things you always wished your phone could do. Calendars, specialized calculators, games, reference guides, news feeds and social networking software are just a few examples of the power a BlackBerry has, but a lot of people have yet to take advantage of.

Download Method # 1: BlackBerry App World

The good: The BlackBerry App World is RIM's official challenge to the iPhone's App Store. You can purchase (if the software isn't free, and most is free) and download software right onto your BlackBerry when you're on the go. It works anywhere and installs "Over-the-Air" meaning no computer is involved, just your phone downloading the software directly from the internet over the cellular network (or WiFi).

How to use it:  Go to the RIM website and search for the App World. It will give you a web address for installation. Simply open that website in your BlackBerry's browser. From there, you can download the App World onto your phone Over-the-Air. Once it's installed, you can begin downloading apps to your heart's content!

The bad: First of all, it's not compatible with all BlackBerrys. The newer ones can use it, but if yours is an "experienced" model, it's likely incompatible. The BlackBerry App World is not as open to individual developers as the Apple App Store. Now, although the really big-name software that you use is often from a large company (say a Facebook app), the most popular mobile apps out there tend to be from more "boutique" developers and the more useful tools tend to be less mainstream since they have to be, by definition, more specialized. For this reason, it may be best to look elsewhere for a special piece of software you just can't find on the BlackBerry App World. In addition, apps on the App World will generally tend to be more expensive than elsewhere (if it is a paid app) because RIM charges fees and commissions that add to a developer's costs.

Download Method # 2: Online BlackBerry App "Retailers"

The good: There are tons of websites out there that sell software for all kinds of mobile devices, including the BlackBerry. The good news about this is that you can shop around different online stores the same way you might browse at different clothing stores. You can find a store that you like that sells software the suits you and your needs. A lot is free and the ones you have to pay for generally are very high quality. Technical support is quite good, especially for the paid apps. It's all about specialization and the ability to offer infinity different types of software for your BlackBerry.

How to use it: Start at http://www.handango.com. These sites will link to others where you can continue your search. Different sites have different delivery methods. Many of them use an Over-the-Air system like the App World.

The bad: If you're looking for an extremely advanced app, use the App World. Sometimes installation processes are not that simple, but usually you will not have problems.

Download Method # 3: Google, Google, Google

The good: If it exists, you can find it. If it doesn't exist, you'll probably be able to find something very similar. That is to say, you'll find what you're looking for 99 times out of 100. No matter how specialized, someone has likely made it and you can find it. It may or may not be free, but BlackBerry software is generally fairly-priced. It'll be rare to pay more than an admission to the movies. Finally, you'll almost certainly able to find a version that works with your BlackBerry model.

How to use it: Guess how. Start from Google (or another search engine like Yahoo, etc.) and search "(insert what you want) for blackberry." Different sites will have different delivery methods. Many of them will be an Over-the-Air download. Some of them may also let you plug your BlackBerry into your computer via USB and click a button with your mouse to install it. All of this will be explained on the individual sites.

The bad: If you don't know what you're looking for, you might get lost!

AT&T Launch New Blackberry for SMES

AT&T and Research in Motion (RIMM) have worked together to launch Blackberry Professional Software in an attempt to lure small and medium sized businesses to the BlackBerry service.

This new BlackBerry software package makes the handheld email system cheaper and easier to use than ever. The package can cater for up to 30 users and offers a wide range of features such as access to email, contacts, a calendar facility, and internet access, which allows small to mid-sized businesses source information or even update their own content managed website remotely from anywhere in the world.

The new software package is much simpler than the Enterprise version of BlackBerry that is used by larger businesses. It doesn't need a dedicated RIM server, and it can be easily installed on a number of e-mail servers such as Lotus Notes and Microsoft Exchange. In addition to this, the new software system employs a number of predefined user policies. These policies provide a straightforward version of the security and IT features provided by BlackBerry's Enterprise service, so they give small businesses access to a number of important features, including the ability to limit features on an employee's handset, as well as being able to lock down lost and stolen BlackBerry handsets.

Michael Woodward, AT&T's vice president of business voice, data and wireless products, believes that their new software will help small and medium sized businesses to take advantage of the BlackBerry services that were previously only available to larger companies. He said: "BlackBerry Professional Software will allow our small business customers to more easily afford and implement BlackBerry service so that they have many of the controls and security features and the productivity benefits of staying connected that large business customers enjoy."

BlackBerry Professional Software offers businesses the opportunity to take advantage of either a five or ten user package. These packages are available at a reasonable price, making them far cheaper than the larger Enterprise service. The new software is only available to businesses with fewer than 30 employees. However, if a business on the new programme finds itself outgrowing this limit, their software can be easily upgraded to the much larger Enterprise server.

Analysts believe that the simplicity of this new BlackBerry programme will make it a resounding success. Jack Gold, analyst with J. Gold Associates, said: "Basically, smaller businesses still have wireless e-mail needs, but generally don't have IT departments to install and maintain complex e-mail systems. This is a good way for AT&T to sell more smartphones, while offering their clients a way to enable wireless e-mail."

Chris Hall, senior director of BlackBerry offers at AT&T, echoed this sentiment. He said: "Small and midsized business need voice and e-mail to do business, and this solution fits the needs of legal firms, to small financial companies, to catering companies."

BlackBerry Professional Services is currently available in the USA, although it is unknown if and when it will be made available to small businesses in the UK.

Understanding the BlackBerry Ecosystem - The BlackBerry Handheld

The BlackBerry smartphone has its roots in a two-way messaging device called the "Interactive Pager" released in 1995 by Research In Motion, a small hardware designer based in Waterloo, Ontario. Unlike today's BlackBerry devices, the Interactive Pager did not work on normal cellular data networks, instead using a special-purpose wireless data network known as Mobitex. The device even looked like a pager, except that it included a small keyboard for user input.

The trademark "BlackBerry" first appeared in 1999 as the name for RIM's end-to-end wireless email solution for corporate customers. The term "Interactive Pager" was dropped and the pager was rebranded the "RIM 950". The form factor remained the same, though, about 3.5 inches wide by 2.5 inches tall, and it still worked only on the Mobitex network.

The first handheld device that looked somewhat like today's BlackBerry smartphones was known as the RIM 957, introduced in 2000. RIM moved away from Mobitex to using conventional GPRS networks for wireless data access in 2001. Voice service -- so you could use a BlackBerry wireless handheld for phone calls as well as email -- was introduced a year later.

The BlackBerry smartphones available today are a far more sophisticated than the earlier models from a hardware viewpoint. The trackwheel on the first devices was eventually replaced with a trackball, which is now being replaced with a trackpad or a touch-sensitive screen, depending on the model. Cameras are now included with every device, and many models offer consumer-friendly features like WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth.

The underlying software platform hasn't actually changed all that much. The earliest devices ran a custom operating system written in C++, but RIM moved to the Java programming language in 2000 when it released the 957. From that point on, applications could be written by third parties using RIM's version of the Java Micro Edition (Java ME) platform instead of a custom C++ software development kit.

The move to Java solved two problems for RIM: it let them make changes to the base hardware (such as switching from an Intel 386 architecture to an ARM-based CPU) without disrupting software development, and it also allowed them to easily certify and sandbox third-party applications to keep them from disrupting other parts of the platform. Moving away from C++ also made BlackBerry software development more approachable. RIM uses Java internally for most of its on-device software development: all the standard BlackBerry applications are themselves written in Java.

Through all of these changes, however, the BlackBerry handheld has always kept its focus on being the best wireless email device on the market, and that's unlikely to change anytime soon. The fact that you can run great software applications on a BlackBerry is just icing on the cake!

The BlackBerry is a wireless handheld device introduced in 1999 which supports push email, mobile telephone, text messaging, internet faxing, web browsing and other wireless information services. Same size as a PDA, with a mini keyboard, BlackBerry device allows you to receive and reply to emails.

How does it work? Connected to a cell phone network (Cingular BlackBerry, T-Mobile BlackBerry, Sprint BlackBerry, Nextel BlackBerry and Verizon BlackBerry), terminal BlackBerry regularly query the email server of the user. When a new email arrives, the terminal signals it. The user can then read the message and reply. Innovation comes from the fact that synchronization of the emails with the messaging server is real time through the cell phone network it is connected and it supports both GSM, GPRS and UMTS.

Of course, BlackBerry service is more specifically dedicated to companies. The devices are very popular with some businesses, where they are primarily used to provide email delivery to roaming employees. To fully integrate the BlackBerry cell phone into a company, the installation of BlackBerry Enterprise Server is required.

But the popular device BlackBerry that allows reading emails using cell phone network is forbidden in some companies. Indeed, some security experts fear about communications being intercepted. However, Research In Motion (RIM), editor of BlackBerry, claims that all the traffic is encrypted from start to end by the Blackberry servers installed in companies. In fact it has the exact same security level as a traditional VPN if correctly configured.

A Blackberry handheld allows users to fulfill their need of communication but also give them the feeling of control that a phone conversation doesn't offer. More and more professionals often work in mobility situation and need to permanently be connected to computing system of the company.

According to a recent study, one third of business users show signs of BlackBerry addiction almost similar to those of alcoholism. Some people even use the ironical term "crackberries" to name the phenomenon. Also, most users are supposed to get BlackBerry devices to enhance their productivity but their constant attachment to email make it hard for them to concentrate on other things when they are out of office.

The professional Blackberry is a "all in one" terminal, phone/PDA/messaging, which design is optimized to allow users to manage emails on the go and to access various applications. The original BlackBerry device had a monochrome display, but all current handsets have color displays.

Most BlackBerry devices is equipped with a full QWERTY keyboard, The ease of keying in and sending not only emails, but also SMS, is particularly practical, even if they do not have a BlackBerry.

However, the BlackBerry has no memory extension, no 3G compatibility, no camera and not much style. What is more, multimedia functions still remain low compared to other Symbian or Windows mobile. That is until today with RIM unveiling its first and brand new multimedia phone dubbed the new BlackBerry Pearl. But still BlackBerry devices depend on mobile phone service coverage and are not WIFI compatible unlike similar handheld devices that are on the market now.

RIM BlackBerry is increasingly integrating instant messaging into their new devices and software. RIM offers its own proprietary BlackBerry Instant Messenger, but also offer a Yahoo Chat and Google Talk clients and probably an upcoming BlackBerry MSN Messenger client.

According to RIM, BlackBerry PDA is used by about 5.5 million users worldwide.

Blackberry is used by almost 3 million users in America. Some sources say about 1 million government employees are regular users. Canada is another one of the key market of the company.

While including the usual PDA applications such as address book, calendar, to-do lists, etc... you can always download more BlackBerry software like games, ringtones, themes, webclient and other applications.
